Chicago Bears Hall of Famer Richard Dent is in hot water after he was charged with driving 107 mph -- 52 mph over the posted speed limit -- on the Edens Expressway in Northfield, police officials said Wednesday. Dent, 54, of Long Grove, is charged with a class A misdemeanor.

Jackie Robinson West hailed by suburban fans

Jackie Robinson West players were treated like national champions at a Black History Month celebration in Northbrook. About 300 fans from across the suburbs filled North Suburban YMCA's gymnasium Saturday for the fun-filled event that included a free hot dog lunch, a multimedia presentation about Robinson and a question-and-answer session with nine players.

The Forest Preserve District of Cook County Board of Commissioners marked its centennial Feb. 11, 100 years to the day after its inaugural meeting. "We recognize the dedication and passion of those who created the forest preserves we enjoy today, as well as the tens of thousands of people who have worked to protect and improve them over the last century," said board President Toni Preckwinkle.
Suburban cheerleading teams prep for state finals

Suburban coaches say the routines that will be happening this weekend during the IHSA Competitive Cheerleading State Finals in Bloomington are "not your mom's cheerleading." Many of the teams have been practicing every day since June, and the competition gets fiercer each year. Watch our video.
Dance teams compete in state championship preliminaries

Ninety dance squads entered the Illinois High School Association state meet on Friday, and 30 remain. The finals will be held today at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington. Seventeen schools in the Daily Herald coverage area are in the mix for a state title.

While most suburbanites would welcome this week's warmer temperatures, Fox River Grove residents are praying for snow. The Norge Ski Tournament marks its 110th year this weekend in Fox River Grove. Organizers said with temperatures rising keeping the slopes snowpacked will be a challenge.
