- I wanted the bluest part of the sky for the background of this photograph of a Illinois native common milkweed, in Highland Woods Forest Preserve District of Cook County on Ela Road just south of Algonquin Road and Hoffman Estates. Normally there is large wide band in the sky that is much bluer. To find it- point your thumb towards the sun. With your thumb remaining pointed at the sun point and move your index finger from one in of the sky to the other. That is the blue band which you can use to make your photographs have a vivid saturated blue sky. You should also make sure your subject is in sun light. If not you will create a silhouette. Milkweed plants very pretty to photograph and are host to monarchs at many stages of their life cycle. Caterpillars feed on milkweed leaves prior to attaching to the milkweed stalk to form their chrysalis. Butterflies return to milkweed flowers after emerging from the chrysalis, according to Western Illinois University.
