From poor to franchisee, former Motorola engineer owns Subways, One Price, other investments
J.D. Patel, a former Motorola software engineer, came from a poor family in India and lived in a small apartment in Schaumburg with a half-dozen other relatives. The Conant High School grad later became an IIT valedictorian. He worked in Motorola and then bought a Subway franchise on the south side of Chicago. He often worked 100 hours a week. He earned enough money to buy as many as 12 Subway franchises, start a construction company, and now he is opening some CD One Price Cleaners in the suburbs.
