What is the worst time to hit the road for the Memorial Day weekend?

Looking to head out of town for the holiday weekend? If so, you may want to alter your plans and not leave during today's rush hour, as AAA says that's when traffic will be the heaviest.

"Our advice to drivers is to avoid peak commute times in major cities altogether - traveling late morning or early afternoon - or plan alternative routes," said Bill Sutherland, senior vice president, AAA Travel and Publishing. He said the worst time to get on the road in the Chicago area today is from 4 to 6 p.m.

Experts are predicting that this Memorial Day weekend will be the busiest for travelers in more than 10 years, with AAA forecasting a 5 percent increase in the number of holiday travelers over last year, even as gas prices creep up from record lows.

The estimated number of drivers taking to the road is nearly 42 million.

"The highest gas prices since 2014 won't keep travelers home this Memorial Day weekend," Sutherland said. "A strong economy and growing consumer confidence are giving Americans all the motivation they need to kick off what we expect to be a busy summer travel season with a Memorial Day getaway."
