Skate Room expands at Hawthorn Mall

After three months, the Skate Room at Hawthorn Mall in Vernon Hills has expanded.

The first and only permanent ice skating rink inside a mall in the U.S. using synthetic ice expanded from 1,299 square feet to 2,253 square feet.

Owner Kevin Jotkus built the rink in November across from the mall's food court.

Skaters glide on synthetic ice panels using regular ice skates. Because the skating rink is indoors and not made of real ice, skaters do no need to wear their coats or gloves.

The 54-foot by 42-foot Skate Room ice skating rink features open skating, private and group lessons for all ages, disco nights, birthday parties and other private events.
