Manufacturers give students a taste of the industry

Suburban manufacturers and high school students recently celebrated National Manufacturing Day by opening their facilities to the next generation of workers.

National Manufacturing Day on Friday was geared to change perceptions of the industry to encourage the next generation of workers to consider a career in manufacturing. Members of the Schaumburg-based industry association TMA participated in the program, including Principal Manufacturing in Broadview; Prater Industries in Bolingbrook; Keats Manufacturing in Wheeling; and Termax Corp. in Lake Zurich.

"Our members continue to engage the community to change the misperceptions of manufacturing," said TMA President Steve Rauschenberger. "Connecting manufacturers and high school students, and informing students of the benefits of seeking a manufacturing career is exactly what today is all about.

"Manufacturers are facing a critical skills shortage that will have an adverse impact on the economy if those jobs go unfilled," Rauschenberger added. "Most students are stunned to learn that you can make over $100,000 and work with cutting-edge technology in today's factories."
