Greek restaurant at old Slott's Hots site in Libertyville still in the works

Things haven't gone as quickly as envisioned, but plans for a new restaurant in a prominent spot on the north end of Libertyville are still in progress.

The owners of Greek Feast in Northbrook continue to pursue what would be their second location, at the former Slott's Hots, 1124 N. Milwaukee Ave., just north of Winchester Road. The hot dog joint was a mainstay in the village for 30 years, but its location has been vacant since Slott's closed abruptly early 2015.

"We're going through the process for permitting," said Peter Vlahakis, co-owner of the family-run Greek Feast. "We're trying to get the job bid out. We want to get it going."

Earlier this year, Vlahakis said he hoped to be open in the fall, but some elements of the plan were redesigned and the process delayed. Since bids won't be available until mid-November with the holidays to follow, construction now is tentatively planned to begin in February.

"We want to be open spring (or) summer," he said. "We don't want to delay the project in the middle."

The work includes closing Slott's drive-through window and gutting and expanding the building.

"We're leaving just the shell," Vlahakis said.

Vlahakis said the family has been interested in Libertyville for a while and remains committed to opening in the village. More than 23,000 drivers a day can see the former Slott's building on Milwaukee Avenue.

A wave of new eateries has opened the past few years with Libertyville gaining a reputation as a restaurant hub.

My Flavor It! Place, 703 N. Milwaukee Ave., is under construction, and applications for construction or occupancy have been received from The GrilCheese, 271 Peterson Road, and Oishi Sushi, 163 N. Milwaukee Ave., in the Libertyville Crossings Center.

State figures show Libertyville's share of sales taxes from the drinking and eating categories rose 9 percent in 2016 to about $800,000 from about $731,000 in 2015.

The Vlahakis family opened the first Greek Feast about eight years ago and also operated Georgie V's in Northbrook. The menu features traditional fare and classic street food.

"A lot of the recipes come from our father and mother and grandparents," Vlahakis said.
