Soccer Success in Geneva to close in August

Saying it was getting harder to compete against growing online sports retailers, the folks at Soccer Success at Geneva Commons on Randall Road in Geneva announced they will close in a month.

The store at 1064 Commons Drive is scheduled to close Aug. 26, store manager Doug Shamoun said.

"It's just kind of hard to stay in business with a small retail store," he said.

Leading up to the closure, Soccer Success is discounting all store merchandise, Shamoun said.

In addition, each weekend, he said, the store has a flash sale on different items.

Shamoun said the store did the best it could for awhile, and found local customers among many soccer clubs in the area.

However, in the end, the variety of sizes and colors available online for everyone was too much to compete against. Soccer Success at Geneva Commons could only carry a certain amount of items in the store. If they didn't have the exact size and color someone wanted, people would order it online.

"There are so many different styles and colors and they want something specific, obviously," he said. "It's just kind of a guessing game, really.

"We can't stock all of it."

Soccer Success is directly across from Dick's Sporting Goods, but Shamoun doesn't think Dick's was a large factor in the store's downfall. In fact, he said, the folks at Dick's would often send customers to them for more specialty items.

Since news of the impending closure hit, traffic in the store has been heavy.

"Everything is discounted basically. Shoes are discounted pretty heavily," he said.

"It's actually been extremely busy. Everyone wants a piece of the pie before it's all picked over."

Win a Yeti:

They are a little pricey for many people to buy, but they are highly sought after.

The Algonquin Commons mall is offering customers a chance to win a Yeti Hopper cooler.

To win, you will need to bring in your receipts totaling $100 or more from the mall's stores or restaurants. The receipts must be dated from July 1 to Sept. 30.

Each person that brings in their receipts will be entered into a drawing to win the Yeti cooler valued at $299. The receipts must be brought to the guest services department.
