Algonquin Commons flag display honor the fallen

With the Fourth of July holiday in full swing, people have the opportunity to remember and honor the people who've served our country.

A sea of flags honoring those who have served and given their lives for our country line the grassy parkways at the Algonquin Commons Mall on Randall Road.

Volunteers from the Veterans Network Committee are scheduled to begin removing the field of flags at noon Wednesday, volunteers said, so there's plenty of time to check out the display.

The flags represent fallen heroes from Illinois who served in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Many people have traveled to see the flags and to find the ones representing their friends or loved ones. Each flag contains the name of a fallen hero.

There are more than 300 flags, each naming a soldier, their hometown, age and rank.

Representatives from the Veterans Network Committee have manned the flag display at the Commons 24 hours a day since earlier in the week. The committee's mission is to help the poor, disabled and distressed veterans in northern Illinois.

The committee also helps veterans' dependents and the widows and orphans of deceased veterans, according to its website. It also assists veterans wanting to participate in honor flights. The group is based in Fox River Grove.

Move Over Slime: The Learning Express Toy Store in Geneva Commons hosts a free putty-making event this month for kids 5 and older.

The make-your-own Crazy Aaron's Thinking Putty event begins at 1 p.m. July 12. Participants can choose from concentrated color putties to mix their own special color of putty. They can add special effects such as glitter and something to make it glow in the dark. Kids will take home their creation on a tin container.

The putty event is free but there are a limited number of spots available. To reserve a spot call Learning Express at (630) 232-8697.
