The app xCurrency gives you an easy way to convert from dollars to pounds to yuan and back, among many other currencies. You can customize a list of top currencies on the app to make sure you have quick access to the ones you need most - particularly useful if you're on a long trip that requires different conversions. All of that could help you avoid an overdraft fee later, when you realize you didn't properly calculate the cost of that tchotchke you picked up.

The design is elegant and user-friendly, so you should be able to get the information you need when you need it. You can also take a peek at how currency has been valued over time. The app requires an internet connection to work. Free, for iOS and Android.

TypeShift

Love word games but can't quite get the knack of filling out a crossword puzzle on a mobile device? TypeShift streamlines and updates the experience for touch screens. Players are presented with several adjoining strips of letters, which they can slide into the centerline to make different words. Tiles change color once they've been used in their proper words.

One mode gives crossword-like clues. Puzzles get more difficult as the game goes on.

Players can pay for more packs, though there are quite a few free levels, if you're willing to look for them in the list of options. There are ads, but they aren't too intrusive. Users can buy additional packs for 99 cents or $1.99, which will get rid of ads and unlock customization options. All in all, TypeShift offers an engaging, challenging and quick wordplay experience - and there's never a crossword.
