Push Heroes

Push Heroes feels like the sort of game you would have played on an old-school console: a top-down, grid-based map on which you fight monsters for glory. Except instead of using a controller, you tap and slide to control your characters in turn-based battle.

The result is simple but very fun.

It definitely fits the bill as a commuting distraction or activity for a mental break. The game gives you the option, as you progress, to be a sword-wielding hero, an archer or other special characters.

For those who love a classic, uncomplicated role-playing game, it more than fits the bill. The game does have in-app purchases that will help you along, but it's perfectly possible to play without buying your way to the top.

Mujo

Battle for dominance - but in a pretty low-key way. That's the approach in Mujo, a tile-based battle game that has players stock up on resources and rely on a mix of strategy and luck to use them effectively. Players are essentially dealt a grid of cards with different resources on them, including the option to attack your computer-generated opponent.

You can tap these resources if at least three identical cards touch; you can also choose to stack your resources to save them for a different turn. If you're not having luck with your current grid, you can move the whole thing up to reveal a new row of resources that might help your fortunes change. You can also unlock special powers and cards that can help you defeat your enemies. Mujo is ad-supported, and users can pay for bonuses to help them along.
