White Sox acquire German in trade with Red Sox
In a move that adds some depth in the bullpen, the White Sox acquired right-handed relief pitcher Franklin German Friday in a trade with the Red Sox.
White Sox minor-leaguer Theo Denlinger goes to Boston in the deal.
The 25-year-old German was 5-2 with a 2.72 ERA, 7 saves and 64 strikeouts in 49⅔ innings last season and was named the Red Sox's minor-league pitcher of the year.
Called up by Boston in September, German pitched in 5 games for the Red Sox and allowed 8 runs on 7 hits and 4 walks in 4 innings.
The Red Sox designated German for assignment on Jan. 30.
Denlinger, 26, combined to go 2-2 with a 4.47 ERA in 40 relief appearances with high Class A Winston-Salem and AA Birmingham last season.
The right-hander was the White Sox's seventh-round draft pick in 2021 out of Bradley University.
To make room for German on the 40-man roster, the Sox designated right-hander Jason Bilous for assignment.
Bilous pitched in 31 games (21 starts) for Birmingham and Class AAA Charlotte last year and was 6-11 with a 7.15 ERA.
