Teachers in suburban Chicago vote to end strike

GENEVA, Ill. (AP) - Classes will resume in the Chicago suburb of Geneva for nearly 6,000 students after teachers voted in favor of an agreement between their union and the school district.

Monday afternoon's vote came several hours after the teachers union announced that a tentative agreement was reached after a negotiating session with a federal mediator.

Teachers began their strike on Tuesday, causing schools to be closed and the cancellation or postponement of many activities, including games for sports teams. Classes remained canceled Monday but the vote means students will be back in class on Tuesday.

Salary proposals were a major dispute in negotiations and the previous contract had expired in August.

The union says two-thirds of the 450 members of the union voted in favor of the tentative agreement.
