Feds selling former military depot in northeastern Indiana

NEW HAVEN, Ind. (AP) - The federal government is selling a former military depot in northeastern Indiana that once stored hazardous chemicals and heavy metals.

The General Services Administration announced Thursday that it opened an online auction last month of the 259-acre former Casad Depot.

The Journal Gazette reports New Haven officials had been negotiating with the GSA to purchase the old depot that's a few miles east of Fort Wayne.

City economic development director Brian Yoh says the negotiations collapsed amid disputed appraisals. He isn't sure if the city will take part in the auction. New Haven officials planned to tear down the site's World War II-era buildings and develop a mile-long industrial park.

The depot had stored defense-related materials, including hazardous chemicals, mercury and other heavy metals. It was closed in 1981.
