Trash collection company apologizes for missed pickups

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - A garbage collection company that officials say is responsible for missed pickups in a northeastern Indiana city is apologizing and promising to do better.

The Journal Gazette reports Red River Waste Solutions took out a full-page advertisement Sunday in the newspaper after a Fort Wayne councilman proposed fining the company for breaching its trash and recycling collection contract.

Red River took over garbage collection duties Jan. 1 after it outbid the city's longtime garbage collection business. Red River earlier was fined $65,000 for issues in April and May. The ad says the company will be increasing training for staff, hiring more drivers and updating routes.

Councilman Russ Jehl, who last week proposed action for alleged breach of contract, said in an email people "want the garbage picked up, not more promises."
