Firefighters use chain saws to rescue trucker from woods

LOWELL, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say firefighters had to use chain saws to get to a driver whose semi-truck went off a road and into a wooded area in northwest Indiana.

The crash happened Saturday night along Interstate 65 near Lowell.

Indiana State Police say the truck hauling airline snacks ended up about 300 feet (91.5 meters) into the woods. Police say rescuers weren't immediately able to get to the truck because of the trees. The driver refused medical treatment after being rescued.

Police say the 55-year-old driver told them he crashed after swerving to avoid a car that cut him off. Troopers say, however, that they didn't find any evidence of sudden action by the truck driver. Instead, police say a gradual path was found leading from the roadway.
