Indianapolis area getting box for safely surrendering babies
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Indianapolis area is getting its first baby box where people may anonymously surrender a healthy newborn without fear of criminal prosecution.
The box announced Thursday is going in at the Decatur Township Fire Department. The padded, climate-controlled box notifies authorities when it's been used.
The box is from a nonprofit called Safe Haven Baby Box Inc. that was founded by firefighter and paramedic Monica Kelsey, who was abandoned as an infant. She says education and awareness about safe haven laws will help save the lives of children.
Other baby boxes have been installed at the Coolspring Township Volunteer Fire Department in LaPorte County and Woodburn Fire Department in Allen County. Babies have been safely left at the LaPorte County box last November and in April.
