Suburban Chicago man charged with fatal hit-and-run

CHICAGO (AP) - A Cook County judge has denied bail to a man charged with murder in the death last week of a Chicago woman who was struck by a car being chased by police.

Judge David R. Navarro on Sunday denied bail for Curtis Pugh of Matteson, who prosecutors said recklessly drove the car that struck Julia Calloway on Thursday.

Calloway was crossing a Chicago street when the car slammed into her and another pedestrian. The 55-year-old woman was taken to a hospital where she later died. A 30-year-old man was treated at the scene.

Police say Pugh drove away, but later crashed the car. Authorities say drugs were found in the car.

Pugh's attorney, Daniel T. Coyne, would only say his client had a minor criminal record, and the current case was "an aberration."
