Syracuse QB Zack Mahoney signs with CFL team

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Former Syracuse quarterback Zack Mahoney has signed as a free agent with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.

The Blue Bombers announced the move on Friday.

A walk-on from the College of DuPage in Illinois, Mahoney played three years for the Orange and earned a scholarship prior to the start of the 2016 season. He served as the backup to starter Eric Dungey the past two seasons.

In 25 games that included nine starts, Mahoney passed for 1,949 yards and 10 touchdowns, and rushed for 242 yards and four scores.

Mahoney is the sixth former Orange player to sign as a free agent with a professional team this year. Linebacker Zaire Franklin was the only one picked in the NFL draft, selected by the Indianapolis Colts on the seventh round.
