Ex-police officer charged with sexual abuse while on duty

CHICAGO (AP) - A former Chicago police officer is accused of groping and forcibly kissing a woman while on duty at a police station in 2016.

Cook County prosecutors announced Thursday that Michael Clifton is charged with criminal sexual abuse and official misconduct. Authorities say Clifton was arrested Wednesday in Lansing.

Assistant State's Attorney Kenneth Goff says Clifton assaulted a 37-year-old woman who came to a district police station seeking an arrest warrant for a man who allegedly beat her at a nightclub.

Goff said Clifton groped her, kissed her neck and tried to reach into her clothing while making sexual comments.

Cook County Circuit Judge David Navarro ordered Clifton held in lieu of $100,000 bond.

Defense attorney Kelly Krauchun says the 59-year-old Clifton was a 31-year police veteran before retiring last year.
