Charleston woman fit for trial in 2-year-old son's death

CHARLESTON, Ill. (AP) - A 22-year-old Charleston woman who's charged with first-degree murder in the death of her 2-year-old son has been found mentally fit for trial.

Savannah M. Weiss is being held at the Cole County jail and is due back in court next month. She has pleaded not guilty. A Coles County public defender who represents Weiss filed a motion asking for a clinical psychologist to examine her. The judge granted the motion without objection from prosecutors in January.

Weiss is accused of failing to provide food, water and sanitary conditions for the child, which led to his death by dehydration or starvation. Authorities allege Weiss left the child unattended in a playpen for three days and awoke to find him unresponsive.

Weiss could be sentenced to life in prison if convicted.
