Students stage walkouts of suburban Chicago high schools

CHICAGO (AP) - Hundreds of suburban Chicago high school students joined a nationwide protest against gun violence.

Students at Oak Park-River Forest High School walked out of class on Wednesday, a protest that coincided with a march on the Florida state capitol in Tallahassee by students from Parkland, Florida. That is where 17 students were gunned down last week at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Oak Park-River Forest student Connor Hartweg called the nation's gun laws broken, noting the government isn't doing anything to fix them.

At Naperville Central High School, senior Ben Russell organized a walkout with four others. He said he felt a walkout to protest gun violence was needed, and because he hadn't heard of anything being planned he and his team put one together.

Students of Schaumburg High School also walked out, rallying around a large sign proclaiming: "We are students. We are victims. We are change."
