Illinois mother pleads guilty in baby's suffocation death

ALORTON, Ill. (AP) - A southern Illinois woman has pleaded guilty in the suffocation death of her 6-month-old daughter.

The Belleville News Democrat reports that 35-year-old Kimberly A. Jenkins of Alorton pleaded guilty Wednesday. She was charged in May 2017 after Mariah McCorkle suffocated while the two were asleep on a couch. Court documents show Jenkins was under the influence of alcohol when she fell asleep on the couch with the child.

Jenkins will spend 30 months on probation and serve 26 weekends in jail as part of a plea agreement. She'll also have to attend substance abuse treatment among other conditions.

Friends and family members wrote letters to the court in Jenkins' defense saying she loves her children and would never purposely hurt them. Jenkins has five other children and a grandchild.
