Chicago man sentenced for having gun linked to boy's slaying

CHICAGO (AP) - A federal judge has sentenced a Chicago man to nearly 5 ˆ½ years in prison for illegally possessing a gun linked to the shootings of two children.

The Chicago Tribune reports 26-year-old Demond Coffee was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty last year to one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. The newspaper reports the pistol was reported stolen in Indianapolis in April 2015. Court records show it was used to kill 7-year-old Amari Brown in July 2015 before it was used in a shooting that wounded a 15-year-old boy a month later.

Coffee did not admit in his declaration to knowing about the weapon's history when he was arrested in August 2015. He hasn't been accused in any violence attached to the gun.

Coffee's attorney argued for a sentence of three years or less.
