Duncan back with White Sox as pitching consultant

The Chicago White Sox have been piling up promising prospects for the past 14 months, but the rebuild hasn't stopped there.

The Sox have also been beefing up their minor-league staff to help develop all of the young talent.

After the 2016 season, Chris Getz rejoined the White Sox as director of player development, Mark Grudzielanek was hired as Class AAA Charlotte manager and Steve McCatty took over as Charlotte's pitching coach.

Former Charlotte pitching coach Richard Dotson shifted to minor-league pitching coordinator and Fremd High School product Mike Gellinger was promoted to hitting coordinator.

This off-season, Omar Vizquel rejoined the Sox as Class A Winston-Salem manager.

On Thursday, the White Sox announced Dave Duncan is joining the organization as a pitching consultant.

Duncan, 72, will review and evaluate video of pitchers and pitching prospects and provide feedback.

"Given his impressive experience and accomplishments in this game over decades in the dugout, Dave provides us with another set of valuable eyes to give insight into our major-league pitching staff, our minor-league prospects, other major-league staffs and even some of the amateur arms we might be considering for next year's draft," Sox general manager Rick Hahn said.

Duncan was a major-league pitching coach for the Indians (1980-81), Mariners (1982), White Sox (1983-86), A's (1986-95) and Cardinals (1996-2011). His 32 years as a pitching coach is the longest tenure in baseball history.

For the past four seasons, Duncan was a special assistant to the GM/pitching consultant with the Diamondbacks.

"I am looking forward to the opportunity to watch the many talented pitchers in the White Sox organization and offer my own thoughts and impressions based on my coaching experience and knowledge," Duncan said. "I have already been talking to (pitching coach) Don Cooper and (bullpen coach) Curt Hasler, and the coach in me is excited to look for ways to contribute toward making a pitcher even a little bit better."

Roster moves:

The Sox have agreed to terms on minor-league contracts with relief pitchers Bruce Rondon, Jeanmar Gomez and Xavier Cedeno and infielder Jake Elmore.

All four received nonroster invitations to spring training. White Sox pitchers and catchers report to major-league camp in Glendale, Ariz., on Wednesday.

In parts of four seasons (2013, 15-17) with the Tigers, the injury-prone Rondon was 8-7 with a 5.00 ERA, 7 saves and 133 strikeouts in 111⅔ innings. Last year, the 6-foot-3, 275-pound righty was 1-3 with a 10.91 ERA in 21 appearances with Detroit.

Cedeno is 8-7 with a 3.98 ERA in 201 career games with the Astros, Nationals and Rays.

The 31-year-old lefty was 1-1 with a 12.00 ERA in 9 games with Tampa Bay last season, missing most of the year with forearm tightness.

Gomez is 27-28 with a 4.39 ERA in 273 career appearances (46 starts) with the Indians, Pirates and Phillies.

Elmore is a career .215 hitter over five seasons with the Diamondbacks, Astros, Reds, Rays and Brewers.
