LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Officials in Lafayette are looking to add electronic cigarettes to the city's ban on smoking inside most businesses.

The Lafayette City Council has given initial approval to an ordinance that would prohibit vaping into any restaurant or store which admits those younger than 21. It wouldn't include tobacco shops or bars that permit smoking.

State law bans smoking in most public places, but doesn't address the electronic cigarettes that typically heat a liquid nicotine solution into vapor. Indianapolis, Greenwood and Bloomington are among Indiana cities that have restricted vaping.

Lafayette council President Ron Campbell tells the Journal & Courier that several residents have raised concerns about vaping and that it's unclear what chemicals are in the vapor clouds.

The council could vote on final approval of the ban next month.
