Historic Vincennes mural moves to Knox County Public Library

VINCENNES, Ind. (AP) - A 160-year-old mural of the Wabash River front of historic Vincennes has moved to a new home in the Knox County Public Library.

The mural that's more than 10 feet wide was recently given to the library by Vincennes University. The university's Shake Learning Resources Center is undergoing a major renovation and items from its Byron R. Lewis Historical Library are being sent to other local collections.

Former university librarian Richard King tells Vincennes Sun-Commercial that if someone is interested in the city's history, they can point to buildings in the mural and learn a lot about what life was like back then.

Local historian Richard Day says an original, much smaller image, called a panoramic map, was a lithograph created in 1857 by Strobridge and Co. in Cincinnati, Ohio.
