Indiana House speaker on cold beer bill: 'I'd call it dead'

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana House Speaker Brian Bosma says legislation allowing pharmacies, grocers and convenience stores to sell cold beer is almost certainly dead for the year.
But the Indianapolis Republican said Thursday that the issue won't go away. He says the key to legislative success is adopting a gradual approach.
His remarks come after a Senate panel on Wednesday overwhelmingly voted down a bill that would have allowed more retailers to sell cold - and not just warm - beer.
Currently the right to sell cold beer is primarily enjoyed by liquor stores, who have exercised their considerable clout to keep it that way.
Bosma said the Legislature should focus this year on repealing the state's ban on Sunday carryout alcohol sales.
