Man leads deputy on high-speed chase in northern Indiana

NEW CARLISLE, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say a man led a sheriff's deputy on chase reaching speeds of 130 mph (209 kph) in northern Indiana before crashing and being arrested with help from a law enforcement dog.

The LaPorte County Sheriff's Office says the chase started Tuesday night after the deputy tried to stop the vehicle along U.S. Highway 20. The vehicle sped from LaPorte County into St. Joseph County, where it crashed in the New Carlisle area.

The driver fled on foot and the deputy's K-9 knocked him down and bit him.

The department says the 35-year-old Mishawaka man was wanted on a warrant for felony possession of a syringe. He'll now face other charges. A 20-year-old pregnant woman who was a passenger in the vehicle was taken to a hospital as a precaution.
