Police investigating Mokena woman's death as homicide

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) - Police say they're investigating the death of a missing Mokena woman as a homicide after she was found fatally shot in the head.

The Will County Sheriff's Office said Thursday that detectives located 24-year-old Kaitlyn Kearns's body and her 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee during an overnight search in a rural area of Kankakee County. She was reported missing Tuesday after being last seen early Monday at a bar in Joliet where she was a bartender.

The Kankakee County Coroner's Office confirms that Kearns suffered a single gunshot wound to her head. Detectives say they believe she was the intended target and there is no threat to the community. Police say they're continuing to investigate Kearns' death and ask anyone with information to contact law enforcement.
