Buyouts, contract extensions can complicate coaching changes

Big buyouts and contracts that are quickly extended have become the norm for major college football coaches. Those deals and dollars that come with them can complicate the decision to make a coaching change.

The contract details of notable coaches whose job security is uncertain as the final month of the college football season begins. In some cases, buyouts are subject to mitigation if the coach takes another job.

Bret Bielema, Arkansas

- Under contract through 2020 season.

- Buyout at the end of this season: $5.9 million .

- Last contract extension: Received new six-year deal after the Razorbacks went 7-6 during the 2014 season, Bielema's second season as coach.

- Record since extension (through Oct. 28): 18-16, 9-12 in the SEC.

Butch Jones, Tennessee.

- Under contract through 2020 season.

- Buyout at the end of this season: $8.1 million.

- Last contract extension: Received additional two years after the Volunteers went 6-6 during the 2014 regular season, Jones' second season as coach.

- Record since extension (through Oct. 28): 21-13, 9-12 in the SEC.

Jim Mora, UCLA

- Under contract through 2021.

- Buyout at the end of this season: $12.275 million.

- Last contract extension: Received additional two years after UCLA went 8-5 during the 2015 season, Mora's fourth season as coach.

- Record since extension (through Oct. 28): 8-12, 4-10 in the Pac-12.

Mike Riley, Nebraska

- Under contract through 2020.

- Buyout at the end of this season: $6.6 million.

- Last contract extension: Received an additional year in September after Nebraska went 16-12 in his first two-plus seasons.

- Record since extension (through Oct. 28): 3-3, 3-2 in the Big Ten.

Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M

- Under contract through 2019 season.

- Buyout at the end of this season: $10 million.

- Last contract extension: Received new six-year new contract after the Aggies went 8-4 during the 2013 regular season, Sumlin's second season as coach.

- Record since extension (through Oct. 28): 29-18, 14-15 in the SEC.
