Ex-Russian basketball boss given jail term for embezzlement

MOSCOW (AP) - The former president of the Russian Basketball Federation has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison after being accused of embezzlement, state news agencies reported on Monday.

Yulia Anikeeva was alleged to have worked with two accountants to channel federation money to companies she controlled.

Total losses reportedly amounted to 44 million rubles ($765,000).

Anikeeva ran the federation from 2013 until 2015, when she was removed from office by a Moscow court which found election irregularities.

Her tenure ended with Russia barred from international basketball competitions over relentless internal feuding among officials.

Former NBA All-Star small forward Andrei Kirilenko was elected president in August 2015, and remains in charge of the federation.
