4 killed in Turkey coal mine collapse

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - Turkish media reports say a coal mine has collapsed in southeast Turkey, killing at least four miners. Rescuers were trying to reach one other mine worker who is still trapped inside.

The private Dogan news agency said the mine located in the province of Sirnak - bordering Iraq and Syria - collapsed on Tuesday, trapping eight workers. The report said that seven of them were rescued but four of them later died while hospitalized.

The cause of the collapse wasn't immediately known.

In 2014, 301 miners were killed in a fire inside a coal mine in Soma, western Turkey - the nation's worst mining disaster. The tragedy exposed poor safety standards and superficial government inspections in Turkey's mines.
