4 Illinois men arrested for torturing, killing piglets

BENTON, Ill. (AP) - Four people from southern Illinois have been arrested on charges of theft and animal torture after they allegedly stole piglets and killed them.

The Southern Illinoisan in Carbondale reports Franklin County Sheriff Don Jones says two juveniles were arrested in addition to 18-year-old Trenton H. Bennett of West Frankfort and 20-year-old Brendan A. Shaputis of Ewing.

According to Jones, the four allegedly stole about 30 piglets, each about 5 to 7 days old, from the Logan Sow Center in Benton.

Authorities allege Bennett tortured several piglets. He allegedly kicked, beat and struck the animals until their deaths. One piglet was tossed off an overpass. Shaputis is also accused of killing piglets in the same manner as Bennett.

Authorities say the juveniles have been released to their families. Bennett and Shaputis are being held in lieu of $45,000 bond. It wasn't immediately known if they have lawyers.
