Sheriff: Madison man kills self after shooting at officers

MADISON, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say a southern Indiana man fatally shot himself after shooting another man and firing upon responding officers.

Jefferson County Sheriff John Wallace says 24-year-old David Michael Head was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside his Madison home following the incident Thursday night.

He says Head allegedly shot 24-year-old Kevin Royalty inside the house. Head then fled across the street to seek help.

Wallace says that when officers arrived on the scene, Head fired several shots at them before retreating inside the house, where an additional gunshot was heard. Head later was found dead.

Wallace says no officers fired a shot.

He says Royalty was shot several times in his upper body and airlifted to a hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. His condition wasn't known.
