Remains exhumed from Indiana cemetery likely won't return

CLARKSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - The descendants of people whose remains were exhumed this summer from a pioneer-era cemetery in southern Indiana say they're unhappy those remains likely won't be reburied there.

Clarksville officials initially said the 17 sets of remains excavated from the Stewart-Emery Cemetery for a road-widening project would possibly be reinterred there.

Town Manager Kevin Baity says all of the descendants of the graveyard's last known owner would have to be tracked down for consent to rebury the remains there.

But he tells The News and Tribune that probably won't be possible.

Janus Bowling says the news from town officials is "very disturbing, very disrespectful" of her family and other descendants of those whose remains were excavated in the Ohio River community.

The exhumed graves dated from between 1830 and 1900.
