Former NCHSAA executive director Adams dies at 81

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Charlie Adams, the former North Carolina High School Athletic Association executive director, died Sunday. He was 81.
NCHSAA spokesman James Alverson said family members informed the organization that Adams died. No cause of death was disclosed.
Adams led the NCHSAA from 1984 until his retirement in 2010, and during his tenure the organization moved state championship games to college campuses and established an endowment to benefit member schools.
Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford, who worked with Adams in bringing the championships to college facilities, called him "a true sportsman and an amazing advocate for high school athletics in North Carolina."
