Illinois home named to National Register of Historic Places

BEMENT, Ill. (AP) - A central Illinois home where Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas had a historic meeting is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Bryant Cottage State Historic Site in Bement (bee-MENT) was built in 1856. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources, which manages the site, says according to Bryant family tradition Lincoln and Douglas met in the home's parlor in July 1858 to plan the famous Lincoln-Douglas Debates.
The National Register of Historic Places recognizes the home as the site of the historic meeting and a well-maintained "hall and parlor-type" middle class home from the 1850s.
Benjamin Pollard is site manager. He says "the listing is the result of years of work."
