Several seeking to replace convicted Lake County sheriff

CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) - More than a half-dozen candidates are seeking to become the new sheriff for northwestern Indiana's Lake County following the previous sheriff's removal upon being convicted of federal bribery charges.

More than 500 Democratic precinct committee members are meeting Saturday in Crown Point to select someone to complete John Buncich's term through the end of 2018. Candidates include Lake County Deputy Police Chief Daniel Murchek, Schererville Police Chief David Dowling and former county Commissioner Gerry Scheub.

A federal jury convicted Buncich last month of accepted bribes to help tow company operators get more jobs through his department in Indiana's second most-populous county. He denied all wrongdoing and is awaiting sentencing Dec. 6.

Republican Portage Mayor James Snyder faces similar federal bribery charges and is scheduled to stand trial in January.
