Hundreds honor ex-Chicago officer 29 years after shooting

EVERGREEN PARK, Ill. (AP) - Hundreds of police officers joined other mourners for the funeral of a former Chicago police officer who died 29 years ago after being shot in the head while on duty.

Officers in dress uniforms assembled Monday outside Queen of Martyrs Church in Evergreen Park to honor 66-year-old Bernard Domagala. The Cook County medical examiner's office says his death last week was caused by complications from his head wound.

First deputy police superintendent Kevin Navarro says Domagala and his family suffered for decades from his injuries.

Domagala was shot in 1988 as he and other officers surrounded a home after Tommie Lee Hudson shot a mover trying to evict him.

Hudson was found to be mentally ill and committed to a mental health facility, where he died in the 1990s.
