Davidson downs Div. III Brevard 30-7 in opener

DAVIDSON, N.C. (AP) - Stockton McGuire, Wesley Dugger and Kahleel Shaw each ran for scores and Davidson beat Division III member Brevard College 30-7 in Saturday's season opener.

Backup quarterback Tyler Phelps' first pass was an 82-yard scoring strike to Pat Tabor in the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats defense held the Tornados to 234 total yards and minus-4 yards rushing and scored a safety when Brendan Simpkins tackled Bobby Clerisier in his own end zone for a 2-0 lead.

McGuire's 6-yard TD run in the second quarter was set up by William Wicks' 40-yard punt return and aided by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against the Tornados.

Dugger scored on a 10-yard run and gained 198 yards on 31 carries but lost two fumbles. Shaw scored on an 18-yard run.

Tyler Gregory scored on a 6-yard run for Brevard, his only carry. Jason Nieradka had 17 tackles.
