Fall for Lake Tahoe's secret season: Autumn

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (AP) - Lake Tahoe is a favorite destination summer or winter, whether fringed by snow or gleaming cobalt blue under sunny skies. But there's a third side to Tahoe: autumn.

As crowds thin out, the region seems to take a breath as it prepares for the seasonal switchover from camping and sailing to ski runs and cozy chalet evenings.

Trails in fall are roomier, rates cheaper and the lake's waters remain both beautiful and bracing. Oktoberfests and food-and-wine events fill the fall calendar too.

All this and leaf-peeping: While most of the area trees are pines that stay green, there are groves of aspens that turn russet and gold.
