Attempted carjacking victim fatally shoots teen suspect

CHICAGO (AP) - A teenager was shot to death by an off-duty Chicago Fire Department lieutenant who said the boy tried to steal his car.

Police say the un-named fire official left his car running on Chicago's West Side early Monday and allegedly observed the 17-year-old getting into the vehicle. The 45-year-old lieutenant told investigators he fired at the teen in an attempt to stop the suspect from running him over.

Authorities say the suspect was shot in the chest and was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where he was pronounced dead. The teen's identity hasn't been released.

Police say the lieutenant has a valid concealed-carry license and firearm owners' identification card.
