Springfield City Council approves resolution against hate

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Springfield City Council members have unanimously approved a resolution affirming the state capital city's commitment to civil rights and opposition to racism.

Tuesday's vote comes two days after hundreds attended a vigil in Springfield honoring those killed and injured at a protest and white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday. The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports that Alderman Doris Turner says the resolution speaks to "what we as a city believe and what we as a city will then do as we enact our policies and procedures." Turner spoke at the Springfield vigil along with other faith and community leaders.

Mayor Jim Langfelder says he supports the resolution. He says Springfield wants "to be the model city with regards to not only race relations, but economic development and everything else."
