St. Colette, Islamic Society of Northwest Suburbs partner on food drive

Members of two religious communities in Rolling Meadows will come together next week to host a food drive for the less fortunate.

Volunteers from St. Colette Parish and Islamic Society of Northwest Suburbs will hand out fresh produce and breadstuff next Thursday morning in the Catholic church's parking lot. St. Colette and four other parishes in the Northwest suburbs host a Chicago Food Depository truck each month as part of a rotation, providing care packages to some 200 families each time.

Mark Stastny, who coordinates the food drive at St. Colette, attended an open house at the mosque in April. Since then, he and Abdul Javid, chairman of mosque's community outreach, partnership, and interfaith committee, have discussed ways to work together on various events, such as the food drive. The mosque also plans to help out at St. Colette's 60th anniversary picnic Aug. 27.

"We're building unity within the community through this joint effort," Stastny said.
