In other first-round action, Henri Laaksonen of Switzerland beat Canadian Vasek Pospisil in three sets. Laaksonen next faces top-seeded Dominic Thiem.

In the women's draw, former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic retired while trailing Oceane Dodin 2-0 in the third set. Dodin will next face Sara Errani, who beat Risa Ozaki in straight sets.

Second-ranked Simona Halep plays her first-round match on Tuesday afternoon.
