Western Illinois mother accused of child's drug overdose

GRANITE CITY, Ill. (AP) - A western Illinois woman who was found suffering of a narcotics overdose is accused of allowing her nearly 2-year-old son to ingest drugs.

Twenty-five-year-old Billie Jean Cottle of Granite City faces charges of aggravated battery, reckless conduct and endangering the life of a child.

Madison County Sheriff John Lakin says a relative found Cottle unresponsive in her home Monday evening. He says it's unclear how the child ingested the drugs.

Lakin says emergency responders used anti-narcotic treatment Narcan on the child several times before he responded. He was treated for methamphetamine and fentanyl intoxication at a nearby hospital.

Cottle remained at the Madison County Jail on a $250,000 bond Wednesday.

There's no phone listing for Cottle, and the newspaper says no one answered a knock at the residence's door.
