Bridge renamed for late Illinois State Police sergeant

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (AP) - A bridge over the Mississippi River has been renamed for an Illinois State Police officer who died near the bridge 16 years ago.

The Rock Island Argus reports (http://bit.ly/2tr1GKy ) Centennial Bridge was renamed the Master Sgt. Stanley W. Talbot Memorial Bridge during a ceremony Monday. The bridge connects Rock Island, Illinois, and Davenport, Iowa.

Talbot died in 2001 at age 50 after he was dragged by a driver who was fleeing a roadside safety checkpoint near the bridge. After being dragged for several blocks Talbot fell and was hit by a police officer who was chasing the driver in another car.

Talbot's son, Collinsville Police Officer Doug Talbot, attended the ceremony. He said seeing all the other people who attended "makes me proud to be his son."
