Clemson women's basketball coach gets contract extension

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) - Clemson trustees have approved a contract extension for women's basketball coach Audra Smith.

She led the team to 15 wins this past season after only four victories a year earlier. Smith's new deal runs through the 2020-21 season. She has not had a winning record in her four seasons with the Tigers, who have been under .500 for 13 straight years.

Smith's program has shown signs of improvement. The Tigers started 11-2 last year before finishing 15-16. They also won the team's first game in the ACC Tournament since 2014 and its non-conference mark of 11-2 was its best showing since 2003-04.

Clemson athletic director Dan Radakovich says the program improved on and off the court. He believes that Smith has the Tigers positioned for more improvement going forward.
