Illinois judge to rule next month on DNA in ex-Marine's case

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) - A northern Illinois judge will rule next month on whether DNA evidence can be used at the trial of a former Marine accused of fatally stabbing two girls.

The (Waukegan) News Sun reports (http://trib.in/2tb0pa9 ) that a Lake County judge heard arguments last week in Jorge Torrez's case and will rule Aug. 30. Torrez is charged with the 2005 killings of 8-year-old Laura Hobbs and 9-year-old Krystal Tobias in Zion. Prosecutors say Torrez stabbed the girls while they played in a forest preserve.

Defense attorney Jed Stone says the DNA isn't complete enough to be used at trial. Prosecutors disagree.

Torrez previously was convicted in the 2009 slaying of a Navy petty officer in Virginia. He also has received life sentences for stalking attacks on three women in Virginia in 2010.
